'˜Now we go to Walsall with confidence'

Gary Caldwell says last week's postponement of their game at Walsall might have worked in Chesterfield's favour.

The Spireites were due to tackle the Saddlers last Tuesday, but a waterlogged pitch saw the game called off.

It was rearranged for tomorrow night and now Chesterfield go into the fixture on the back of a morale boosting victory – their first under Caldwell’s management.

At the same time as Chesterfield were beating Swindon 1-0 away from home, Walsall were doing them a favour with a 2-0 victory over Oldham, the side fifth bottom in League One.

So the Town boss admits it’s another difficult test for his side.

“They’re a club that know the league well,” he said.

“The manager came in last year and has done extremely well getting them in the position they are.

“I don’t think it will be an easy game.

“I think coming off the back of Saturday is better for us than last week.

“We can go in with confidence.”

Caldwell made no bones about how much he enjoyed Saturday’s late Reece Mitchell winner and the three point haul.

But it’s soon forgotten as preparations for Walsall begin.

“This is a big week in our season and if we can get two results it will really give us a chance going into the remaining games,” he said.

“After you win games the euphoria wears off and the next challenge comes very quickly.

“We have to get our focus back on a performance and another positive result.”

The Scot isn’t getting carried away after the win.

While he insists he’s still full of belief that Chesterfield will stay in the division, he isn’t predicting 11 victories to close out the season.

“There will be ups and downs,” he said.

“You have to be ready for the rollercoaster that it is.

“It’s a time of the season when every game is important and we have to be ready to put in the sort of performance we did on Saturday. If we have that effort and commitment from everyone, then we have the quality to stay in this league.”
