Worthington decides to go

NIGEL Worthington is stepping down as manager of Northern Ireland after their final Euro 2012 qualifier in Italy tonight.

The former Sheffield Wednesday left back took charge in June 2007 and his contract was due to expire at the end of the year - Northern Ireland don’t play again after tonight until next February.

Northern Ireland’s hopes of qualifying for next summer’s Euro 2012 finals were extinguished following Friday night’s 2-1 home defeat to Estonia in Belfast.

Worthington made over 400 appearances for the Owls in a 10 year career up to 1994.
