Teams wanted for new Meadowhall Sheffield & District Under 21 Sunday League

Have your say

The Meadowhall Sheffield & District Sunday Football League is launching a new Under 21 league for next season (2011/12). The new Under 21 league has been created to bridge the gap which currently exists between the Sheffield & District DB Sports Under 18 Sunday League and adult football.

The transition from playing in an Under 18 to adult league is a great step and sadly, players often decide to leave the game altogether rather than giving themselves time to adjust.

The new Under 21 league aims to give players a more natural process of progression and offers a dynamic and fresh approach to developing individuals from this age range. Junior clubs will also be able to stay together in the Under 21 league as part of the Meadowhall Sheffield & District Sunday Football League.

Matt Handley, Sheffield & Hallamshire FA Football Development Officer commented: “We see this league as an extremely important stepping stone into adult football. We are all aware of the transition issues that occur in junior football from Mini Soccer to 11v11, but there is also a massive drop of player participation from Under 16. The Sheffield & District DB Sports U18 League helps bridge this gap, but we then have a further decline after the Under 18 league due to the massive step into adult football.

This new Under 21 league will help make this transition smoother and less daunting. I would like to congratulate The Meadowhall Sheffield & District Sunday Football League for their forward thinking and ambition in establishing this extremely important cog within the machine that is football in South Yorkshire.”

The Meadowhall Sheffield & District Sunday Football League is in the final stages of obtaining Charter Standard status from Sheffield & Hallamshire FA - the first adult Sunday League to do so in the area. Receiving this status will bring a range of benefits for its member clubs - 30 of which have received Adult Charter Standard Status.

A forum for all clubs wishing to join the new Under 21 league has been arranged for Thursday 19th May 2011 at the Source Building, Meadowhall, 7.30pm.

Any clubs wishing to pursue membership are welcome to attend having first contacted either Robin Beynon (League Secretary) 07931500596 or Martin Gilmour (League Chairman) 07778861648. To join the league all players must be Under 21 on the 31st August 2011.
