Match Report by Chris Eyre

The final of the Taylor&Emmet Sunday Junior Challenge Cup took place before a good crowd at Bracken Moor, Stocksbridge.

From the kick off both teams attacked each others goal, but without really troubling their opponents goal keeper. However after 25 minutes Arbourthorne SWD from the Rotherham & District Sunday League took the lead when a hopeful lob into the penalty area was completely missed by two defenders and fell nicely for Brett Spankisman to stab home from close range past the diving goal keeper. In the 32nd minute, Spankisman was about to score his second goal when he brought down a centre very nicely to see his colleague Brandon Wilde pinch the ball off his toes and hit it into the back of the net to make it 2-0.

Both teams continued to attack and just before the break a long lob into the area found Redmires Nick Hickson nicely positioned to give the keeper no chance with a well placed shot from near the penalty spot. Shortly afterwards the whistle went to end the first half and the teams went in with the score 2-1 to Arbourthorne.

Redmires from the Sheffield Sunday Sports League came out looking for an equaliser, and this arrived in the 48th minute when Dale White’s cross from the touch line was neatly headed home by Dave Knaggs from the edge of the six yards box.

The game continued from end to end and Referee John Etheridge had a busy morning, eventually issuing 11 cautions. Unfortunately John Bramall received his second in the 62nd minute, reducing Arbourthorne to 10 players.

Redmires Ben Palmer thought he had scored the winner in the 79th minute when he shot from the edge of the 6 yard box only to see Janade Lymer in the Arbourthorne goal somehow block his shot and them palm over the bar Palmer’s second attempt from the rebound. It was then Redmires keeper Karl Taylor`s chance to save the day when he just managed to palm over the bar a 30 yards shot from Andy Holberry. There was no further score and the game was 2-2 after 90 minutes.

Redmires started the first period of extra time in an exceptional way. First, Man of the Match Dave Knaggs hit a snap shot from 30 yards out, and all the keeper could do was watch it into the net. Then in the 3rd minute of extra time, Knaggs centre was met at the back post by Nick Hickson to hit home his team’s fourth goal. From the kick off Hickson got the ball and put Knaggs through, but the Arbourthorne keeper made a fine save to keep the ball out.

Arbourthorne continued to push forward and Brandon Wilde’s effort was saved on the line at the second attempt by keeper Taylor, and then Taylor just managed to get his fingers to an effort from substitute Ryan Kavanagh and push it round the post for a corner. No further score was achieved and the final whistle went with Redmires having come back from being two down to win an entertaining game 4-2.

Maurice Matthews, President of the Sheffield & Hallamshire FA presented the medals and the Taylor&Emmet Sunday Junior Challenge Cup to Redmires FC
