Stocksbridge get off mark in pre-season campaign

Stocksbridge Park Steels registered their first pre-season win with a 2-0 victory at NCEL Premier Division Retford United.

Both the goals came in the first half. Danny Cardwell headed Steels in front from a corner after a Rory Coleman free-kick had been tipped over the bar and Jacob Lever added the second just before the interval with a cool finish tucking the ball under the keeper.

Stocksbridge round off their pre-season campaign at Ossett Town on Saturday ahead of the Evo-Stik Division One south season opener against Market Drayton Town at Bracken Moor on Saturday, August 15.

Former Sheffield FC striker Zeph Thomas marked his official debut for Frickley Athletic by scoring the Blues goal in a 3-1 defeat against North Ferriby United in their final home pre-season friendly.

Worksop Town drew 1-1 at Shirebrook Town in their penultimate friendly. Former Hallam and Stocksbridge striker Jamie Smith nodded in to give the home side a 14th minute lead after the Tigers defence had failed to deal with a long punt downfield.

Mark Shaw’s men drew level on the hour mark when substitute Mitch Husbands converted Jack Waddle’s low cross. Another substitute Conor Higginson should have won it for the Tigers in the dying minutes but blasted over the bar from cose range.

Worksop entertain Boston United tonight (7.45) in their final warm-up game ahead of next Saturday;s NCEL Premier Division opener at Athersley Recreation.

Maltby Main continued their excellent pre-season campaign with a 1-1 draw against a Sheffield United X1.

Ben Thornton put the Miners in front on 39 minutes but the lead last just six minutes as Jerome Slew levelled. Maltby have won five and drawn one of seven friendly outings and will be hoping to carry that form into the league when they open with a tough trip to Tadcaster Albion on Saturday.

Goals from Kurtis Morley (pen), Ellis Wall and Adam Wisdom in stoppage time saw Staveley MW beat Evo-Stik opponents Carlton Town 3-1 at Inkersall Road, while Parkgate were beaten 2-1 at home despite Ryan Johnson giving the Steelmen a 14th minute lead. Armthorpe Welfare beat Ossett Town 2-0 with goals from Danny Mansaram and James Handley
