Sunday 18 March 2012, 2pm kick-off. Look Local Stadium, Stocksbridge.

An inspired half-time substitution helped Sheffield FC Ladies triumph over city-rivals Sheffield Wednesday Women’s 4-0 in the Sheffield & Hallamshire FA Women’s Challenge Cup final.

Sheffield FC started the game brightly at a cold but sunny Look Local stadium, home of Stocksbridge Park Steels, and should have been a couple of goals to the good in the opening 15 minutes.

Firstly, the impressive Jodie Michalska raced clear of the Wednesday defence, only to drag her shot wide of the target.

Her strike partner, Carla Ward, was then denied by a fine save from the Wednesday ‘keeper Daniella Maslin just two minutes later. Maslin produced another fine save soon after to deny Sheffield FC’s Melissa Cook, whose right-footed volley from within the area appeared goal-bound.

Wednesday, who compete in the division beneath Sheffield FC Ladies, settled into the game and forged themselves a couple of chances, the best of which fell to Laura Naylor. Her tame effort from outside the area was easily stopped by Jessica Horsley in the Sheffield FC goal.

Jessica Tait also went close for Wednesday, but her header was tipped around the post by the Sheffield FC ‘keeper.

Sheffield FC Ladies manager Helen Mitchell brought on Ellie Gilliatt for Lauren Davids at half-time, and the change instantly paid-off. GILLIATT’s 46th minute cross-cum-shot flew into the back of the net beyond the outstretched Maslin to break the deadlock and give the Women’s Premier League side the lead.

Sheffield FC doubled their lead just four minutes later, with Gilliatt again involved. This time she picked the ball up within her own half and waltzed through the Wednesday defence before playing through MICHALSKA, who slotted the ball into the bottom corner.

Wednesday’s Emily Scott then saw her magnificent free-kick curl into the back of the net, only to be ruled out by the referee for encroachment by the Sheffield FC wall. Scott’s resulting free-kick went narrowly over the bar.

The tie was effectively over on 76 minutes. Sheffield FC’s Leanne De Silva and Lisa Giampalma combined well in the centre of the park to play-through MICHALSKA, who claimed her second of the afternoon with a lovely right-footed drive.

The scoring was completed four minutes later when Carla Ward’s corner took a cruel deflection from Leanne DE SILVA to deceive the Wednesday ‘keeper as Sheffield FC Ladies went on the lift the Women’s Challenge Cup for the first time.
