Non-League football: Worksop out to topple leaders

The top non-league match locally today sees booming Worksop Town attempt to topple Evo-Stik League leaders Skelmersdale at Sandy Lane.

Worksop go into the game unbeaten in 11 matches and are one of three teams realistically in with a chance of winning the Premier Division.

Skelmersdale are top with 54 points from 25 matches then it’s Chorley and Worksop on 50 pts but Chorley have played three games fewer, 22.

The Tigers are coming off the back of a 5-2 home win over Ilkeston Town on Boxing Day in front of 501 when their prolific striker Leon Mettam scored his fourth Premier Division hat-trick of the season.

It takes the 27-year-old’s tally to 34 in total, 29 of them in the league.

Meanwhile, relegation-threatened Stocksbridge Park Steels entertain second-placed Chorley and Steels have to pull themselves together after a shattering stoppage time 4-3 defeat at home to Frickley on Thursday to leave them nine points from safety.

In Div One South, Sheffield FC - beaten at Belper - go to Chasetown.
