Bracken Moor, Stocksbridge Park Steels

Jubilee Sports 3 – 1 Manor Castle

Match Report by Chris Eyre

The final of this seasons Sheffield & Hallamshire Junior Challenge Cup featured two teams from the South Yorkshire Amateur League for the first time ever. The final took place in front of a large crowd at Bracken Moor, Stocksbridge Park Steels.

Both teams started at a fast pace looking for an early goal. Manor Castle’s Danny Cowley saw his header from close range hit the post before being put out for a corner. At the other end Matt Turner saw his lob over the keeper just go over the crossbar. Jubilee Sports eventually scored the first goal after 19 minutes. A long throw into the penalty area by Nicholson was headed on by Deane and fell nicely for Lee Grocock to tap in at the back post. Both teams continued to play some good football and in the 34th minute Jubilee Sports made it 2-0.

Matt Turner received the ball just outside the penalty area, moved forward and used his size to shrug off a tackle from a defender, before hitting a 20 yard unstoppable shot from an acute angle past Skinner in the Manor Castle goal. There was no further scoring in the first half and Jubilee Sports went in at half time 2-0 in the lead. Manor Castle came out looking for a way back into the game and Chris Edwards was unlucky to see his fine header beat the keeper, but hit the bar and bounce back into play before being cleared for a corner. Then Blake put team Captain Nathan Houghton through but keeper Shannon Melia produced a brave diving save at Houghton’s feet to stop him scoring.

Jubilee Sports also pushed forward and Turner’s header from a Nicholson cross was well saved be keeper Skinner. Manor’s Noughton tried a 40 yards shot which was well saved by the keeper. However in the 42nd minute Nathan Houghton was rewarded for his efforts when he headed the ball into the Jubilee Sports net from a right wing cross to set up a frantic last few minutes. With Manor Castle pushing forward for an equaliser, the ball was hit out of the Jubilee Sports defence and fell nicely for Gary Cooper who ran forward towards the Manor goal. As he tried to round keeper Danny Skinner, the keeper brought him down to give Jubilee Sports a penalty, and earn himself a red card. Chris Turner gave the stand in keeper Noughton no chance from the spot.

As the ball hit the back of the net Referee Peter Sporne blew the whistle for the end of the game with Jubilee Sports 3-1 winners. Jubilee Sports win the Sheffield & Hallamshire Junior Challenge Cup to add to the South Yorkshire Amateur League Cup which they won two weeks earlier at the same ground.

The Sheffield & Hallamshire Junior Challenge Cup and medals were presented by Brian Jones, Chairman of both the Sheffield & Hallamshire FA and the South Yorkshire Amateur League.
