Hallam boss Steve Toyne is pleased by preparations for the forthcoming NCEL season which kicks off with a trip to Knaresborough Town on Saturday, August 9.

He said: “We’ve shown up well in the pre-season friendlies so far but we’re still looking to add to the squad.

“There’ll be some new additions over the next couple of weeks but the quality of player we’re looking at means we need to keep our cards close to the chest until they are signed up.”

Toyne has already brought in young forward Reece Davis who has been released by Sheffield Wednesday, along with Grant Allott and midfielder Daniel Flynn.

Simon Mirfin, who previously played for Toyne at Dinnington, has rejoined his former boss after spending last season at Frickley Athletic, while goalkeeper James Dean arrives from Kettering Town. It is understood Toyne is also chasing a highly rated winger.

Hallam were narrowly beaten 3-2 by a Sheffield United X1 at Sandygate Road in midweek. Davis fired the Countrymen into the lead but United hit back to lead 2-1 at the break with a Jake Wright brace. The visitors extended the lead with a deflected free-kick but Toyne’s men pulled one back when Lewis Whittaker scored with an excellent far post header.

Stocksbridge Park Steels’ new look side twice came from behind to draw 2-2 on in their latest warm up game at Athersley Recreation.

Lee Garside headed home a Liam Schofield corner after the hosts had taken an early lead from the penalty spot to send the teams in level at the break. Athersley regained the lead after the interval but Adam Podmore ensured it finished honours even with a near post header.

Sheffield FC eased to a 4-0 win at Dronfield Town. Lee Gregory gave Club a 1-0 half-time lead with Liam Atkinson, an own goal and Jamie Hadfieldgiving Mick Wadsworth’s men a comfortable win over the NCEL Division One side.

Handsworth Parramore won 3-1 at Teversal through Sam Smith and a Lee Whittington brace.

Two goals from Craig Fletcher gave Parkgate a 2-1 win at Harworth CI but Worksop Town were beaten 4-0 at Rainworth MW. And Maltby Main suffered their first pre-season defeat going down 4-2 at home against Pontefract Collieries.
