FA Cup dream over for lacklustre Sheffield FC

Sheffield FC’s cup dreams are over for another year following a 3-1 replay defeat against Warrington Town at Dronfield after a game delayed due to floodlight issues.

Warrington made the early breakthrough taking a sixth minute lead as Steve Foster tapped in a low cross. Club were unlucky not to be back on level terms four minutes later as Joel Purkiss rattled the upright. However, the visitors doubled their lead on 16 minutes through a Scott Metcalf penalty following a challenge by Brandon Cardwell. A goal line clearance prevented Purkiss reducing the deficit.

Sheffield pulled one back on 66 minutes when James Knowles hit home. And Mick Wadsworth’s men were agonisingly close to an equaliser three minutes as Tim Whittaker’s fine strike hit the inside of the post and went across goal.

Foster made the game safe with his second of the of the game.

Meanwhile, Frickley Athletic came from a goal down to win 2-1 at Witton Albion.

In the NCEL, Handsworth Parramore were beaten 2-1 at Heanor Town, while Shaw Lane Aquaforce blew away Thackley 9-0. Parkgate were beaten 4-1 at home by Premier Division leaders Tadcaster Albion. Penistone Church lost 3-1 at Rossington Main, while Worsbrough Bridge Athletic lost 1-0 at home by Bottesford Town.

But Division One leaders AFC Emley came from behind to win 5-2 at Teversal.
