The midfielder was left out of the Magpies’ squad for their penalty shoot-out win in the Carabao Cup against Newport County last night and afterwards Bruce admitted the deal to take Barlaser to South Yorkshire is ‘due to be agreed’.

Barlaser – who helped the Millers win promotion to the Championship last season during a season-long loan at the New York Stadium – had played in the club’s previous two cup ties. Bruce, however, has now made a decision on the 23-year-old, who has a year left on his contract at St James’s Park.

Bruce said: “Barlaser looks as if he’s going down to Rotherham. I didn’t want to stand in his way. I think it’s due to be agreed.”

It has been reported that Newcastle have put a sell-on clause in the deal to sell Barlaser, which will see the Premier League side get 50% of the fee should Rotherham ever cash in on the midfielder.
