Nathan Tyson's sensational hat-trick; good week for John Pemberton and improved home form - five talking points from Chesterfield's win against Ebbsfleet United

History maker Tyson

What a day for the 37-year-old.

John Pemberton opted to start him on the bench which was a little surprising given his excellent performance on his full debut against Wrexham two weeks ago.

But the Spireites caretaker manager said after the game that he knows he is a good impact player and he showed exactly that with a blistering 23-minute hat-trick to turn the match in Chesterfield’s favour.

Eyebrows were raised when Pemberton signed him from Notts County on loan until the end of the season last month because of his age but the forward has looked after himself during his career.

The striker replaced the quiet Mike Fondop after 57 minutes and three minutes later he opened his account for Town.

His first goal showed why he has now scored 125 goals in his career as he controlled the ball first time, turned and smashed the ball into the top corner in a split second. It was a moment of quality that was out of place with the previous uneventful 60 minutes.

With 13 minutes to go he grabbed his second with a near post glancing header from an in-swinging David Buchanan corner.

And six minutes later he made sure he was going home with the matchball when he turned his marker on the halfway line - despite an attempt to bring him down - and finished confidently to wrap up the points.

He goes into the history books as the first Chesterfield player to score a hat-trick when coming on as a substitute.

It was his sixth career treble but not his quickest. He scored a 10-minute hat-trick against Crewe for Nottingham Forest in 2006.

Tyson left the pitch at full-time to a standing ovation and huge cheers from the Proact in what has to be one of the best and memorable performances by a Chesterfield player in a very long time.

Clean sheet

As a former defender Pemberton was delighted with the clean sheet - the third time in six games they have done so under him.

Ebbsfleet rarely threatened and goalkeeper Shwan Jalal was hardly tested and that was down to the defence in front of him.

Josef Yarney, Will Evans and Haydn Hollis worked together well as a unit and let nothing past them.

Pemberton has got them organised and they have a determination to keep the ball out of the net which was not there in the first-half of the season.

They still have the joint second worst defensive record in the division but they no longer look a soft touch.

Pemberton’s impressive record

The thumping win rounded off a good week for the 55-year-old who was named caretaker boss until the end of the season on Thursday.

It is four wins and a draw from his six games in charge and he has totally lifted the atmosphere around the club.

He admitted after the game that he almost made a change after just 20 minutes because he was not happy with how they had started.

He normally changes it around the hour-mark and he did so again and it paid off in the most spectacular way.

He is making a very strong case to get the job permanently next season.

Improved home form

The Spireites are unbeaten in five at the Proact with three wins and two draws which is a big improvement considering they lost nine league games on home soil by early December.

They still have five home games to come as against Harrogate Town, Maidenhead, Boreham Wood, Stockport County and Barnet and they will need to make them count if they are to avoid the drop.

Touching distance

The only downside is Chesterfield are still in the relegation zone but only by one point.

All the teams around them won but just three points separates the Spireites and Sutton United in 15th so there are at least six teams looking over their shoulder.
