That was something he never did at The Proact, every one of his appearances for Spireites in his two and a half years at the club was as a starter.

The former Port Vale midfielder paid tribute to Chesterfield FC and its fans after moving for a fee believed to be around £200,000.

He said: “The fans have been very special towards me. They took to me and responded very well. It was an emotional day when I left because I have so many great memories from my time at the club. All the staff were also brilliant with me.

“It’s been an unbelievable time; to get a Championship, a play-off and a day at Wembley, I think any player would take that. Last season we were desperately unlucky not to have got into the Championship.”

He added: “The club is in safe hands. Danny Wilson and Chris Morgan are both ambitious and want to do well.

“There’s great cohesion in the dressing room with a fantastic bunch of players. There are some good players in there and I really do think they can have a positive second half to the season.

“They all helped to make my time there a memorable experience and I’ve made some great friends.

“There will always be a place in my heart for Chesterfield Football Club.”

Of the move, Chief Executive Chris Turner said: “Sam wanted to leave and has wanted to leave for over 12 months.

“Paul Cook, Dean Saunders and myself have sat down on more than half a dozen occasions with him and with his agent on two occasions, to try and sort out a longer term deal, but there was no interest from him to sign.

“We’ve known that and in the two windows since then the valuation of the player has decreased with his contract coming to an end.

“We don’t want to sell any of our players but the unfortunate thing is that once a player knows what contract he’s going to receive and which club it’s coming from they want to go.”

Spireites host Peterborough United on Saturday looking to increase the gap from the bottom four, currently just two points.
