‘A new era’ - Ex-Sheffield footballer and England star Millie Bright makes bombshell retirement announcement
The 88-time England international first made a name for herself at local Sheffield club Killamarsh Dynamos
Chelsea captain Millie Bright has announced that she’ll be retiring from football with immediate effect.

The 32-year-old is widely regarded as one of the finest defenders of her generation having played a leading role in Sarina Weigman’s European Championship winning team in 2022.
The 88-time international also filled in for Leah Williamson as captain during the World Cup a year later and formed a key part of the Lionesses team that reached the final before falling short against Spain.
Bright, who was educated at Sheffield Road School and Killamarsh Junior School, progressed through Grassroots in the Steel City. She first caught the eye playing for Killamarsh Dynamos during her early footballing years, played for Sheffield United women as a teenager and eventually made her professional breakthrough at Doncaster Belles.
Reflecting on her journey in a past interview, Bright said: “Grassroots football is where it all started for me. Playing at Killamarsh Dynamos in Sheffield gave me the chance to fall in love with the game.”
At club level, Bright played regularly for the Belles between 2011 and 2014 while also enjoying a short spell at Leeds on loan in the process.
However, she’s best known for her 12 years with Chelsea which have seen her win eight Women's Super League titles with the Blues - including six in a row between 2020 and 2025 - as well as six FA Cups and four League Cups.

She’s also featured in the WSL PFA Team of the Year four times in an era which has seen Chelsea establish themselves as a dominant force in Women’s Football.
"Representing Chelsea over the last 12 years has been everything to me, but I'm now ready to say goodbye to playing football," said Bright.
"I've given all I can, and I never wanted to fight for any other badge.
Bright’s decision to retire comes with an immediate effect and comes as something of a surprise after the centre-back signed a one-year extension at the end of last year, with an option to also extend that deal by a further 12 months.
However, this season has been a challenging one for Bright in terms of fitness as she has been forced to sit out since February with a frustrating ankle injury.
Bright is adamant that she’ll remain in football, adding in her statement at the end: "It is now time, and I'm ready to go into a new era. I'm always going to be Chelsea, but just in a different way."
The 32-year-old will stay at Chelsea in two off-pitch roles, as a trustee of their foundation and in a new role as an ambassador.
