Millers set for change

Rotherham United will make changes when they face Mansfield Town at Field Mill in the first round of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy tonight.

Manager Mark Robins has intimated he will give an opportunity to a couple of players, at least, and is also likely to give 90 minutes to squad members who have not figured much recently.

However, the Millers manager is aware of the competition ruling which states six 'regular' first-team players must be in the starting line-up.

Last season, Rotherham went out at Hartlepool in the first round and the North-east club were fined for failing to meet the necessary player criteria.

"We'll stick by the rules, of course, but if injuries dictate then you have to change," said Robins.

"That looks like being the case with us in a couple of positions, but I also want to give a chance to other players and see this as a good opportunity to do so."

Robins seems certain to rest goalkeeper Andy Warrington who took a knock on his shoulder during the second half of Saturday's game with Chester, requiring lengthy treatment at the time.

This is likely to mean a debut for Steve Cann, the 19-year-old goalkeeper from Derby County who earned a Millmoor contract after several weeks on trial pre-season along with a couple of other hopefuls.

Robins has also to check on midfielder Peter Holmes who carried an injury out of Saturday's game and he may look to bring in someone else on the left side. Stephen Brogan and Sam Duncum would by among those vying for a place.

He could give a rare starting opportunity up front to youngster Ryan Taylor and, if so, it seems unlikely he would choose him to partner Derek Holmes as they are fairly similar in style.

There could be a recall at left-back for Paul Hurst who started the season in favour but was left out after the Sheffield Wednesday cup tie.

"The fact that there might be changes takes nothing whatsoever away from wanting to win tonight and progress," added Robins. "You go into all competitions looking to do well and if you offer any player the chance to end up playing at the new Wembley - which is where this final is - then they'll certainly take it.

"We want to progress, we want to win and winning is good habit to have."

Mansfield will be without midfielder Lee Bell who was sent off for a second yellow card in the 4-2 win over Stockport .
