Millers ace in hospital dash

ROTHERHAM United defender Marc Joseph discharged himself from hospital, taking himself off a drip to attend Saturday's crucial win over Mansfield Town at Millmoor.

Millers manager Mark Robins revealed that Joseph had been suffering from a "deep-seated kidney infection" since pre-season.

He has started seven league games this season but Robins says he has never been 100 per cent.

"He had been in hospital on a drip, but he discharged himself to come and watch," said Robins after the game.

"Now he has gone back into hospital to get himself back on his drip to get him back to full health. That epitomises the team spirit we have."

Joseph saw goals from Marcus Bean, Marc Newsham and Stephen Brogan give Rotherham their first win in four games although they almost let slip a three-goal lead they had opened up after 67 minutes.

"It was disappointing to concede the late goals but I am not going to dwell on it as three points is three points," continued Robins.

"We may have sneaked it on the scoreline but in terms of possession, the way we played and the chances we created, we could have won it more comfortably.

"There were one or two times when we did come under pressure, but to be fair to my players they have worked their socks off.

"This match just confirms that there are no easy games. I keep saying it but there aren't any easy ones in any division."

This was the Millers first win in four League Two games - and they hoisted themselves to 10th place and within three points of a play-off spot.

Robins gave a first league start to Marc Newsham and the youngster responded with a goal and an impressive performance. He partnered Derek Holmes up front.

Tom Cahill, the striker signed from Matlock Town in the summer and hit by knee surgery, went on for his league debut in the second half.

Ryan Cresswell, the young defender on loan from Sheffield United, went on as a second-half substitute to make his home debut, replacing Marcus Bean who scored his first Millers goal.

In their match programme, Rotherham included a tribute to former manager Ian Porterfield who died recently.

Tomorrow, Rotherham are at home tomorrow to Grimsby Town in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy, second round with a 7pm kick-off.

Although he has to field six first-team regulars, Robins's team selection may reflect the fact that Rotherham are also quickly back in action on Friday night when they travel to Brentford.
