DONCASTER Rovers Belles staged a late rally to claim a 2-2 draw at home to second-placed Birmingham City Ladies in their final league game of the inaugural FA Women’s Super League campaign.
Birmingham started the game needing to beat second-bottom Belles and for leaders Arsenal to fail to pick up all three points away to bottom club Liverpool.
The Blues lost out on both fronts - they squandered a 2-0 lead and the Gunners won 3-1.
Dunia Susi went close to giving Birmingham a first-minute lead when shooting just wide.
Vicky Exley won Belles a third-minute corner with a cracking 25 yarder which Birmingham keeper Maria Hourihan, one of of three former Doncaster players in the visitors’ starting line-up, did well to tip over the bar.
Birmingham took the lead on eight minutes when Karen Carney picked out the unmarked Emily Westwood who beat keeper Mary Earps in a one-on-one.
Exley had a far-post header from a corner deflected for another corner. Kylla Sjorman produced a vital tackle to deny Westwood.
Aine O’Gorman made a determined run down the right before cutting inside and taking a tumble in the box.
Youngster Jess Sigsworth got in a good position after robbing a defender only to fire wide with a weak shot. Carney cleared the bar from 25 yards.
Williams wasted a good chance when failing to pick out Westwood in the box after Exley had been robbed 30 yards out. Jo Potter almost caught Earps out with a stinging angled 25 yarder.
Earps came to Belles’ rescue just before the break, robbing Williams as the England international tried to take the ball round her.
Birmingham doubled the lead on 50 minutes when defender Shelly Cox put in her own net trying to clear the danger from Potter’s free-kick after Earps failed to collect.
Belles’ sub Precious Hamilton fired wide with a 20 yarder then O’Gorman just failed to make contact with Hamilton’s cross in front of goal.
Belles pulled a goal back on 89 minutes with a 25 yard free-kick by Sjoman which took a deflection.
Rebecca Hall levelled with a superb stoppage-time 20 yard angled free-kick after Sigsworth had been fouled.
