Legend: Chesterfield goalkeeping department is in safe hands

Chesterfield are in safe hands with Shwan Jalal and Joe Anyon, according to a man previously tasked with keeping the ball out of the Town net.

Tommy Lee is well acquainted with both of the goalkeepers in the Spireites squad for the new National League season.

He feels manager Martin Allen has a wealth of talent when it comes to that particular area of the pitch.

“I think the goalkeeping situation is strong at the club,” said Lee, who made 373 first team appearances as a Spireite before his retirement through injury early last season.

“The manager is probably going to be spoiled for choice in that area.”

Lee has plenty in common with new first choice stopper Jalal.

Both men arrived at Chesterfield having been released by Macclesfield and have studied on the same journalism degree course.

They also faced off in one of the club’s most memorable games.

“I played against Shwan a few times, especially when he was at Bournemouth,” said Lee.

“He played in the last game at Saltergate I remember and our paths have crossed a few times.”

The man hoping to take Jalal’s place is one of the few remnants of the squad assembled by Gary Caldwell and Guy Branston last summer.

“I spoke to Joe, he’s keen to put pressure on Shwan,” Lee said.

“He’s settled, his baby is a year old, now so he’s got used to that.”
