John Pemberton on whether he would take a final day 'winner-takes-all' relegation clash against Dagenham and Redbridge

Chesterfield sit just above the drop zone in 20th, while the Daggers are one point and two places better off and host the Spireites on the last game of the season on April 25.

When asked about a possible showdown with Dagenham, Pemberton said: “If you said to me I will offer you now to go down there (Dagenham) and if you are to win you are safe, I would not take it because I think we are better than that now. That is pressure but if we end up with it we end up with it.”

The Blues are currently on 41 points with nine games to go.

Dean Keates, manager of Wrexham, who are one place above Town in 19th, has previously said he believes 50 points will be enough to survive in the National League but Pemberton has not got a target in mind.

“No, and honestly I mean that,” Pemberton said. “People say 50 points, some others say 52 points, I do not know. I want to win as many games as we can and hopefully we will and it will be good enough. If it is not, then it won’t be for the want of trying.”

Five of Chesterfield’s nine remaining games are away from home and although Pemberton would have preferred for it to be the other way round he is not too concerned.

He said: ”I have to say I have enjoyed playing at home because our supporters have been brilliant but we get decent support going away now and they have been brilliant also so that does not worry me too much.

“I think it was difficult at one time to play here (Proact) under a lot of pressure but we have got what we have got there is no point harping on about it.”

Meanwhile, Spireites midfielder Charlie Wakefield has joined Matlock Town on loan for a month.
