Once again, Sheffield has been placed among the areas in the ‘very high alert’ tier three which features the tightest restrictions in place once lockdown ends on Wednesday, December 2.

It means no supporters will be allowed back into Bramall Lane or Hillsborough for the foreseeable future.

The news comes just days after it was revealed that supporters would be permitted to return in tier one and tier two areas, with capacities of 4,000 and 2,000 respectively.

United last welcomed fans into Bramall Lane for the Norwich City game on March 7, while Owls supporters haven’t stepped foot inside Hillsborough since the FA Cup fifth round tie against Manchester City three days earlier. Wednesday last played before a paying public on March 7, when they were beaten 5-0 at Brentford.

However, the Blades could be playing in front of a crowd as early as December 12 when they face Southampton at St Mary’s Stadium.

The Saints are based in Hampshire and the county is in tier two, as is Sussex where Chris Wilder’s men travel to when they come up against Brighton & Hove Albion seven days later at the Amex Stadium – although admission will be for home fans only.

As for Wednesday, they will be playing in front of crowds for the first time since March, when football was originally suspended because of the coronavirus crisis, against Norwich City on December 5 due to Norfolk being placed among tier two areas.

The tiers will be reviewed by the Government on December 16.
