'Anyone still backing Monk?' . . . 'absolutely awful' . . . 'we shouldn't be making excuses' - Sheffield Wednesday fans react to dismal defeat to Luton Town

It was an afternoon to forget for Sheffield Wednesday as they slumped to a dismal 1-0 defeat against Luton Town at a soggy Hillsborough.

Pelly-Ruddock Mpanzu’s second half strike secured all three points for the Hatters just minutes after the hosts were reduced to 10 men following Owls defender Joost Van Aken’s red card for a foul on the visitors’ match-winner.

It capped a miserable afternoon for Garry Monk’s men, who remain on minus four points at the foot of the Sky Bet Championship.

Here’s what Wednesday fans on Twitter made of today’s hugely disappointing result at a miserably wet S6.

@Afoxich Let’s see what excuse Monk and his followers come up with today. I have never known a manager produce not just poor results but awful performances on such a regular basis over a period of time, now with two sets of players and come under such little pressure #SWFC

@AbzSWFC You just know Wycombe are gonna get their first win against us btw #SWFC

@ianxwiles Scored 0 at home 11 times under Monk. That’s what we pay our hard earned for. Entertainment and joy #SWFC

@SteveHutton79 Given Monk a lot of backing/support recently and still hope he can turn it around. But performances like that aren’t helping and you can only start to question whether we are on the right track with him. #swfc

@ricollins73 Sorry, but after watching that, we seem to be well on our way to securing football in League 1. Bloody hell, it was awful! Last tenner I’ll be spending on iFollow for a long time... #SWFC #uto #wawaw

@Flockowl Anyone still backing Monk? #swfc

@ewanarm Absolutely awful this afternoon. Just not good enough. Need results in the next two games otherwise think we will never get safe. #swfc

@mrpaulhank Creating nothing … defence wafer-thin. Unless something changes quick we’re down in Jan. #swfc #wawaw

@PolarNigel Should our disallowed goal have stood? Probably. Was Van Aken’s red card harsh? A little. But we shouldn’t be making excuses. In reality, we should have been 2/3 down at half time - today’s performance is indefensible and one of a team who look certain to be relegated. #SWFC

@danielbarrass2 He needed to be sacked last season. Taking us down. Sack him now before it’s too late #swfc

@ThomaSWFC Really disappointed with this result. I understand there were injuries to work around, but clearly something needs to change. There wasn’t enough creativity in the squad and far too few clear chances. Luton looked the more dangerous side throughout. #swfc

@RightmovePat Calm down we need a bit of perspective here, we have a 12 point deduction this season and without it we would be sitting in 16th place

@Ryan_Crossley1 Sack him now before it’s too late! The bloke has not got a clue what he’s doing. Built a side with zero creativity #monkout #swfc
