Chesterfield are sweating over the fitness of a number of key players ahead of this weekend’s season opener at Bury.

Midfielder Jimmy Ryan is struggling with a calf injury picked up in Saturday’s 1-1 friendly draw with Sheffield Wednesday.

Sam Morsy has an ankle knock, Liam Cooper is a doubt with a side strain and club captain Ian Evatt is short on match fitness following a knee injury.

Spireites manager Paul Cook believes the squad he has assembled is strong enough to deal with injuries in any position.

He said: “It’ll be a big blow if Jimmy’s out, he’s 50-50 at the moment but we’ve got depth in the squad and options to cover injuries.

“I’m delighted with the squad in terms of balance and leaders. I think we’ve got goals in the team and defensively we’re looking strong with Ian Evatt joining.”

Sam Hird is in contention with new recruits Ryan Edwards and Matty Brown to fill the centre-back void.

And Cook stated Hird remains in his thoughts, despite putting the former Doncaster Rovers man on the transfer list at the start of the summer.

Cook said: “He’s been playing well, being on the transfer list doesn’t mean you don’t play. The same happened with Neal Trotman last season.

“If something comes up that every party was happy with we’d look at it, if not then he’s available for selection and as we saw on Saturday against Sheffield Wednesday, he’s a good player.”

Jay O’Shea, who missed Saturday’s game through illness, is expected to make a return.

While Nathan Smith continues his rehabilitation from an ankle fracture which has restricted the defender’s game time this pre-season.
