Gary Caldwell said scans on the frontman’s ankle had revealed an issue, but it wasn’t as bad as first feared.

“Ched is progressing well, all the scans are good from our point of view,” said the Spireites manager.

“He’s got a problem in there but it’s not as bad as it could have been.

“Hopefully later on in the week he will be back in training.”

Evans has played only 27 of Chesterfield’s 40 games this season, having first picked up the problem in September when he missed five weeks of action.

It resurfaced in the defeat at Northampton on 11th February but Caldwell believes the former Welsh international can return to play a big part in the relegation battle.

“He’s a huge player for the club with the goals he’s brought in the early part of the season,” he said.

“Injuries have disrupted his season and his fitness levels but we still want him back along with everyone else in the treatment room to provide the squad with a much needed boost, and numbers to help us in the final games.”

Evans has scored seven times for Town this season and is now joint top goalscorer with Kristian Dennis.
