Chesterfield today confirmed the Scottish defender’s arrival, although he won’t officially become a Spireite until 1st July.

The right-back has agreed a two-year deal after Chesterfield fought off competition from other League One clubs.

McGinn was said to have been very impressed by Wilson when the two spoke, so much so that the former Dundee man opted out of other options in England.

Spireites chief executive Chris Turner said McGinn would boost Wilson’s defensive options.

“Paul’s arrival will greatly strengthen the level of competition for a place on the right-hand side of defence. He is very athletic and comes highly recommended.”

McGinn is the brother of former Sheffield United star Stephen, who now plays for Wycombe and Hibs player John.

He started his career with Queen’s Park Rangers and spent time with St Mirren and Dumbarton before two seasons at Dundee, for whom he was a regular, playing 39 times in each campaign.
