Football bosses have put a halt to the campaign until April 30 at the earliest in response to the Covid-19 outbreak in the country but say they are determined to ‘deliver a successful conclusion to the 2019/20 season, subject to the over-riding priority around health and well-being’.

For Wednesday the suspension came just days after the humiliating 5-0 defeat at Brentford, a result and performance which led to chants from the Owls’ travelling support of ‘you’re not fit to wear the shirt’.

The reverse was Garry Monk’s side’s ninth in 14 games since Christmas, when they were riding high in third place in the Championship table.

When and if the current season resumes Wednesday will be sitting in 15th place just nine points ahead of the relegation zone, and Murphy admits results must improve if he and his teammates are to get the fans back on their side.

“I was embarrassed, hearing the fans say we weren’t fit to wear the shirt, that cut deep,” said the 25-year-old winger.

“It hurt me to hear that, but that spurred me on to keep fighting, keep running.

“It was 4-0 at the time when they were singing that, but they pay good money to watch us play. We need to give them effort and show that we care.

“Was it deserved? We were losing 4-0 so probably it was, at the time. The boys are willing to fight for this club.”

Murphy, who joined the Owls from Newcastle United on a season-long loan last summer, has been one of the few highlights of Wednesday’s season since the turn of the year and the former Norwich City man says he and his teammates are fully behind the manager despite calls from some supporters for him to be sacked.

“We are 100 per cent behind the manager,” he said. “He gives us everything we need come match day. When we are on the grass it is down to us. I think he has been brilliant, a fantastic manager.”
