Going gung-ho late on costs us says O'Shea

The Irishman and his Spireites team-mates begin a week of preparation for a visit to another side sitting on 12 points in League One.

And Saturday’s trip to Southend will be a chance to improve a poor 2016/17 away record.

“We’ve been good at home which we weren’t last year,” said O’Shea.

“We’ve not been as good away this season when we were last year.

“We’ve dropped some points away from home in the last few minutes which we need to rectify soon.

“I’m not sure why we have been giving away the late goals, it’s something that we need to sort quickly.”

Picking up points on the road is vital, according to the 28-year-old, now in his fifth season at the Proact.

“We need to turn the defeats into draws and draws into wins,” he said.

“It’s still early in the season and we need to get some wins away from home.”

What might help Chesterfield is something an attack minded player like O’Shea might not be expected to favour.

He wants to see a more measured approach as games reach their latter stages.

“We keep throwing good positions away and we need to work on it,” he said.

“If we cannot come away with the win then we need to come away with a draw.

“We don’t always have to try and win it, especially away from home.

“Any point away from home is a good point.

“It is about game management in the final few minutes.

“At times we have been too open and we need to just sit in and get the point.”
