Goal drought for Spirites reserve team

Chesterfield played a reserves training match against a side from Thomas Danby College in Leeds, run by ex Bradford City's Cec Podd.

The game, just 35 minutes each way in difficult weather at Spireites' Warminster Road training ground, ended goalless, Chesterfield's best chance coming from the man heading the reserves, Wayne Allison, whose effort was disallowed.

Sheffield United loan man Nicky Travis enjoyed his first action in a Chesterfield shirt after his ankle injury and former Blade George Santos got through the game to help build up his fitness levels.

A number of Dave Bentley's youth side played. Following their Midlands Youth Cup win over Hinckley United last week, the second round game against Cheltenham Town has been scheduled for Saltergate on Monday October 8 at 7pm.

Meanwhile tickets are on sale for Steve Blatherwick's Testimonial Dinner at Sheffield's Park Hotel on November 1. England World Cup winner Nobby Stiles is guest speaker and his son, John Stiles, is the comedian. Tickets, priced 45, can be ordered by speaking to Michael, on 07967 407718. There will be an auction of special sporting memorabilia to raise money for Steve's favourite charity the NSPCC.

Testimonial Chairman, Michael Blatherwick commented, "We hope to make it a great night for Steve and I hope Chesterfield fans and businesses will be supportive. It's a great opportunity for businesses to wine and dine their customers and staff."
