Go-karting, farmers' fields and cleaning the gaffer's gaff - Spireites set for 24-hour bash

Chesterfield's players will bond on a go-kart track, a five-mile walk through farmers' fields and cleaning Martin Allen's house.

The Spireites boss has revealed the itinerary for a 24-hour ‘bash’ to bring the squad together before the new season.

Players will travel from the Proact to a go-kart arena on Wednesday morning next week.

Then it’s off to Allen’s house for a barbecue lunch before a walk to his local.

A barbecue dinner will be followed by games, including, in the manager’s words, ‘forfeits and punishments.’

A midnight curfew will give the Spireites plenty of chance to catch up on sleep in order to rise at 7.30am for a five-mile walk in the countryside.

Breakfast (egg and bacon sandwiches) will be cooked by the players themselves.

And they’ll take care of the washing up too.

“They’ll clean the house and leave it spotless,” added Allen.

By lunchtime they’ll be returned safely to the stadium and Allen expects them to have grown closer as a team.

“It’s a 24-hour pre-season trip for team building, team spirit and camaraderie, bringing a big family together,” he told the Derbyshire Times.

“The idea of going to Spain sounds wonderful but it’s far too hot to train in the day times, players are stuck in their rooms in the shade and on top of that, for a week away it costs £35,000 minimum.

“Our 24-hour bash will cost just over £1,000.”
