'˜Give us a break, give us support' Wilson pleads with fans

There were boos from a section of the Proact support at full-time on Tuesday, after Chesterfield drew 1-1 with fellow relegation battlers Doncaster Rovers.

That point moved the Spireites to 50 points, five clear of the drop zone, and while Wilson admitted his side weren’t yet safe, he was adamant they were doing everything in their power to rectify that.

“People get a bit carried away,” he said.

“You’re playing with a team here, we haven’t got a full-back in the club, in the team, we’ve got a winger at left-back, we’ve got a centre-half at right-back, we’ve brought a boy in on loan from Burnley.

“We’ve got players giving everything they’ve got in positions they’re completely unused to. Can you not pat them on the back for that? I can, because they’re giving us everything.

“In the last 20 minutes they gave us everytthing.

“I’m not going to criticise anyone, if people want to do that that’s up to them, but it won’t help us.”

When boos rang out at half-time recently against Port Vale Wilson said it was ‘brilliant’ and helped motivate his men to a stirring comeback.

But with three games remaining in the season he believes audible discontent from the fans is detrimental, and the players need the fans on their side, not on their backs.

“They’re not the players you had who went to the play-offs, get over it,” he said.

“We’re battling away here and we need all the help we can get. If it’s from the fans that’d be absolutely fantastic.

“We’re fighting for our lives, the last thing we want is boos, to have the fans on our backs.

“There will be times when we can’t do what we want to do.

“Give us a break, give these lads a break, give these lads support, they’re giving everything.

“If at the end of the season they get away with it, they’ll have worked miracles.

“They’ve been in a tough position all season.”

Chesterfield’s focus now turns to another huge game at Swindon on Saturday, when victory could see them secure their League One status.

Wilson wants to see more battling from his players as he targets perhaps the most important three points of the season: “We’re not safe, we’re no where near safe. If we start feeling like that we could be punished for it.

“We have to go to Swindon and try to get a win, and after that we might be. But we’re not at the moment, no.

“If we can go away from home and have that kind of attitude, we will have chances.”
