GAME OFF: Frustration for Barnsley stars as Bury game is postponed

Few eyebrows were raised when the news came through at around 10am on Saturday that Barnsley's Sky Bet League One fixture at Bury had been postponed.

Heavy and persistent rain had engulfed the Gigg Lane stadium overnight, both on the pitch and almost flooding the streets in the locality.

A statement from Bury read: "We would like to stress that while there is flooding around the ground, the pitch is also very waterlogged."

A number of the Reds' players expressed their frustrations at missing out on what promised to be a tasty Roses clash in Greater Manchester.

Striker Sam Winnall tweeted: "Gutted the game is off. Hate not playing on Boxing Day.

"Time to prepare for Monday now."

Midfielder Conor Hourihane, who skippered the side in the absence of Alfie Mawson in the previous game against Wigan, tweeted: "Boxing Day is all about football. Gutted the game is off."

Reds chiefs are now hopeful that the rain eases so that today's home fixture with Blackpool will go ahead as planned.

Reds fans have been urged to hold on to their tickets for the Bury clash, but no date has yet been agreed for the re-scheduled fixture.

Sheffield United's clash at Wigan was also postponed, but the rest of the region's games are set to go ahead.
