Veteran’s late penalty forces replay

An injury time penalty by veteran striker Kevin Phillips forced a replay after Clinton Morrison put the Owls ahead at Bloomfield Road.

It was F.A. Cup fourth round, but thoughts of the League One promotion campaign were never far from Wednesday fans’ minds.

Gary Megson’s seven changes came mostly because of next Tuesday’s game at M.K. Dons.

Roared on by 2,200 away fans, Wednesday began to produce cohesive passing in the openeing exchages and carved out a great chance in the 23rd minute.

Sedgwick delivered a corner from the right and to the space beyond the far post where Lowe was waiting to strike a right foot volley cleanly. It looked destined for the back of the net but Gilks made a fine save, turning the ball away to his left.

Blackpool responded with another little spell of possession football but awful defending laid on another chance on a plate for the Owls in the 38th minute when the ball was knocked back towards goal in the middle of the pitch but straight to the feet of Lowe, who was just outside the box.

With Gilks in front of him and a few yards away, the striker did the right thing in trying to lob the keeper but his effort was far too low and went straight in to Gilks’ hands.

Half-time: Blackpool 0 Sheffield Wednesday 0

Wednesday began the second half with Palmer off, Sedgwick moving to the left flank and Jermaine Johnson fitting in on the right. The Owls were not long in putting together a penetrating move and taking the lead in the 52nd minute.

Firstly Blackpool saw their skipper and midfield player Southern walk away down the tunnel after being injured and within moments they were behind.

Prutton played a good ball down the inside right channel to Lowe and it looked as if he was going clear around the keeper on the right side of the box but Gilks got a touch to knock the ball clear. The loose ball fell to MORRISON who did superbly well, lashing home a shot in to the net where the defenders had tried to cover.

As Blackpool piled on the pressure, Sedgwick brought down Taylor Fletcher near the goal and PHILLIPS smashed the resulting penalty in the top right hand corner to force a replay at Hillsborough.
