Steve Eyre, who joined and left the Spireites during Gary Caldwell’s reign as manager, has known Barton for 20 years since his days working in Manchester City’s youth set-up.

Barton will take charge of the Codmen at the end of the season when ex Chesterfield manager John Sheridan departs.

Also said to be part of Barton’s backroom team in a report by Sky Sports, is Clint Hill, who trained with Chesterfield but ultimately joined Carlisle United earlier this season.

Fleetwood are yet to confirm the identities of Barton’s staff.
