Flooded club hit another problem in bid to find a new base

HAVING been flooded out from the pitches and clubhouse they shared with Doncaster Amateur Rugby League Club at Toll Bar, Adwick-le-Street RUFC spent much of July trying to find a new home on the north side of Doncaster.

Since their formation in 1965 they have always been a local side drawing from the northern suburbs and villages around Adwick and Woodlands.

Although they were offered pitches and facilities south of the river, and other local clubs offered them a home, they verymuch wanted to stay in their traditional catchment area.

Eventually in early August the club found a new home at Bullcroft Memorial Hall in Carcroft and the future seemed secure.

The club began to attract new players, especially from the Carcroft and Woodlands areas and some old players returned to play for the club.

It was a body blow, therefore, when club secretary John Sheppard was informed by DMBC last week that due to an oversight and double booking the rugby pitch in Carcroft Park would have to be re-instated as a football pitch.

“No alternative pitches seem to be available and the club appears to have been left with a base at the Memorial Hall, which has welcomed us with open arms and has good facilities, and a growing band of enthusiastic players, but no pitch,” said Sheppard.

“Negotiations have taken place to try and find a suitable pitch but there is nothing in place as yet. Fortunately we are away again on Saturday at Rotherham Phoenix.

Sheppard revealed that at one stage the club were jokingly considering calling themselves Adwick-le-Street Nomads.

“That suggestion might come back to haunt us,” he said.

“It seems unlikely the pitches at Toll Bar will be back in action before the start of next season, although it is hoped that the clubhouse will be back in use early in the New Year.
