Fans might not see the real Martinez this season says Wilson

Chesterfield fans might get a glimpse of Angel Martinez before the season is finished, but Danny Wilson says they won't see what he's really capable of until next season.

The Spaniard is progressing well in his rehabilitation after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament in training last September,

Martinez returned to the training pitch at the beginning of March, and although Wilson is happy with the midfielder’s recovery thus far, he won’t rush to bring him back into first team action.

“He’s doing very well in respect of the cruciate injury he had,” said Wilson.

“Whether or not he’ll make the end of the season we don’t know.

“I was hoping so because I’m looking forward to working with him, he’s a very talented player and would offer us a great deal in midfield areas.”

Wilson suspects that if Martinez does make an appearance during the remaining six games of the League One season, he won’t yet be firing on all cylinders.

The manager said: “Whether we will see the true Angel this season is unlikely, it’s more likely we’ll see him at the end of the season, then pre-season then the start of next term.

“It would be good, but we could still be in the dog fight and won’t throw someone in because everyone wants to see him. We’ll throw him in for the right reasons.”
