His daughter Nikki Trueman said they had been devastated by what they saw as a lack of co-operation from Chesterfield FC, along with a complete silence on how much money had been raised for charity.

But kind hearted supporters clubbed together the £2,000 overnight, and their fundraising now stands at £2,600.

That money will cover the stewarding bill and also go towards Team Ernie, a charity set up by the family of the Spireites’ all-time leading goalscorer, who has a rare form of dementia.

Mrs Trueman told the Derbyshire Times they had been left in tears by the generosity of Chesterfield supporters.

“We as a family are completely overwhelmed by the fans generosity and lovely messages of support,” she said.

“Many tears been shed and we are proud of our fellow Spireites.

“I wish dad could understand how much he is loved. Thank you Chesterfield fans, you’re the best.”

Mrs Trueman said the club have been in contact to arrange a meeting to discuss details of how much was raised by the charity game, held on 22nd May.

Chesterfield refused to comment to the Derbyshire Times, but released a statement on their website which claimed financial details would be resolved once the ‘relevant member of staff returned to the club.’

It said: “When Nikki approached our chief executive, Chris Turner, to ask whether the match could be staged at the Proact, he readily agreed to provide the facilities for the day free of charge.

“In order to comply with health & safety regulations, a set number of stewards were required to be in attendance, as outlined to the organisers from the outset.

“The club has an excellent relationship with the Moss family and long may that continue.

“Ernie is quite rightly regarded as a true Spireites legend following his tremendous service to the club over many years and he and his family are always made welcome at the Proact.”
