Evatt to wait until end of season before deciding on future

The Spireites were beaten 2-1 by Wycombe Wanderers, a result that saw the visitors promoted and sparked wild celebrations on the Proact pitch.

Town’s temporary boss felt there was little between the two sides and rued a decision by the officials to give Wycombe a throw-in during first half stoppage time.

Chesterfield subsequently failed to clear their lines and Wycombe cancelled out the own goal that had previously put Town in the lead.

“We’ve had the better chances, but when you’re down the bottom you don’t quite get the rub of the green,” he said.

“A throw in was clearly our ball and they go and score a minute before full-time. It changes the way the game was going.

“They just got it wrong. That’s what you’re dealing with. If that’s our ball we put it in the corner and we go in 1-0 up.

“In the second half we just switched off from a set-piece, second phase, we said it all week that they score a lot from second phase at set-pieces.

“There wasn’t a great deal in the game.”

Evatt had no complaints about his side’s effort but told them the sight of the Chairboys celebrating promotion at the Proact should bother them.

“I’ve just said to the players in terms of commitment and desire they’ve given me everything, we didn’t deserve to lose the game - but seeing them celebrate on our pitch has got to hurt,” he said.

“They’ve got to go home again tonight, look yourself in the mirror and ask have I done enough this season - the answer is no.

“This is just rubbing salt in the wounds.”

It’s been a whirlwind of a week for the centre-half, who took the reins in the wake of Jack Lester’s departure.

Although the end of that week brought a defeat, he’s relished a new challenge and was happy with the way the team took to their instructions.

“I haven’t seen my missus or kids all week. I’m enjoying it. Whatever role this club sees fit for me to do, I’ll do,” he said.

“I have really enjoyed it.

“There was a slight tweak in the way we wanted to play, we wanted to leave more bodies forward.

“People will have seen the team sheet before the game and thought it was very defensive but it was far from that, Jerome and Brad were attackers and we got a goal through Brad.

“In two to three days we’ve worked on it, the lads have done great.

“We came away from it a bit in the second half and it’s just a harsh lesson of football that you end up losing a game you should never lose.”

He’ll remain in charge for the final two games of the season, but won’t yet confirm if he’ll apply for the permanent position.

“I don’t know, it’s too early for that.

“I’m really enjoying it and I’ll do the best I possibly can, try and win two football matches and we’ll go from there.

“We’re just going to keep attacking and try and win the last two games.

“It’s obviously been a disaster of a season but we’ve got to try and change the mood somehow and hopefully we’ll do that on Tuesday night.”

The Spireites stalwart had a message for supporters, who didn’t create the hostile atmosphere some were expecting.

“They could have made it a lot more awkward for me and the team today but they were fantastic, a credit to the club and themselves, backed me and the team and I can’t thank them enough,” added Evatt.
