The caretaker boss guided the Spireites to a 1-0 win over Newport on Tuesday night in the final home game of the season.

He did so under the watchful gaze of Ronnie Moore, who was sat in the West Stand and is believed to be keen on the job himself.

Ex Town boss Nicky Law is being touted by many as a strong candidate, while former Chesterfield product Kevin Davies lost his job at Southport this week and has twice previously expressed interest in a return to his first club.

Speaking after the match, Evatt revealed he still hadn’t officially thrown his hat in the ring.

“I haven’t applied,” said the 36-year-old.

“There’s still a bit of thinking to be done for myself really.

“It’s a difficult one for me, as much as I’m enjoying it I still see myself as a player.

“It’s a difficult decision either way.”

Evatt has repeatedly spoken of the honour and pride he feels at managing a club where he’s made 265 appearances as a player.

He feels the past week has proved, to himself, that he’s cut out to be a manager and makes no secret of his desire to operate in a dugout one day.

And the response he’s had from the Chesterfield squad has only added to the experience.

“I’m just enjoying being in charge, enjoying the effort and commitment I’m getting from the players,” he said.

“They’ve shown me they have that fighting spirit for these last few games, we deserved more on Saturday and did enough to win tonight.

“That’s all I can ask for, to keep enjoying it, keep working hard, try and win on Saturday and then decisions will be made.”

The club revealed yesterday that they had received almost 30 applications for the job.

Directors Ashley Carson, John Croot and Mike Warner will be involved in the interview process, once a shortlist of around six to eight candidates has been put together, and owner Dave Allen will then make the final decision.

Carson said: “We have received some extremely high quality applications for the role and we will select at least six to eight candidates to interview.

“The application list will be discussed with two trusted former Chesterfield players. A shortlist of three will then be presented to the owner of the club, Dave Allen.”

The club’s deadline for applications is 5pm tomorrow (Thursday).
