DONCASTER Rovers Belles had their hopes of Champions’ League football dashed in yesterday’s WFA Cup quarter-final against Liverpool at Skelmersdale.
John Buckley’s side failed to reach the heights of their recent 1-0 fifth round win at Chelsea and lost 3-0 in the competition which will see both finalists playing in Europe later this year.
“We were disjointed in comparison,’’ said Buckley. “When we got the ball up top we were never there to support it so that side of the game was disappointing for me.
“The pitch was terrible and not conducive to good football, but that’s not an excuse because it was the same for both sides.’’
Belles fell behind after just 40 seconds. “It was the first ball into the box and we didn’t defend it and they scored,” said Buckley.
“We came in at half-time still in the game but we went out for the second and almost the same thing happened and they scored again in the first two minutes direct from a free-kick.
“We had a good ten to 15 minute spell but didn’t take took the chances and they scored again late on.”
Belles kick off the new Super League season at Lincoln on April 14.”
