Enough is enough: Why The Star is supporting our football clubs' social media boycott

It is right that EVERYONE should be able to go about their work without being subjected to harmful abuse online and on social media.

It shouldn’t have to come to this. On the face of it, it would appear to be quite easy for these companies to set up systems whereby abuse is stamped out and abusers are kicked off, identified and punished for their vile actions.

But here we are.

This week, Sheffield United’s David McGoldrick has spoken at length to news outlets around the world about the racist abuse he has faced on social media.

Also this week, Sheffield-born Manchester City player Kyle Walker revealed on his instagram account another despicable example of the type of message that black players are regularly receiving, after his side’s League Cup win at the weekend.

The hate isn’t confined to race. Social media for all its positive attributes can also often be a cesspit of sexism, misogyny, homophobia, ableism … the discrimination feels endless.

This is happening to people in or from our city. On our virtual doorsteps.

How far must the abuse go before something is done?

This stance, headed by football, won’t change much in the short term, but it’s a very good starting point and we at The Star are fully behind Sheffield United, Sheffield Wednesday and everyone else who is leading the call for change.

We will continue to work as hard as ever to provide the latest news, reports and reaction on your teams over the weekend online and in print but our social media channels will temporarily cease over this period.

It’s time for everyone to make a stand against hatred.
