Goals from John Marquis, Ben Whiteman, Alfie May, Mitchell Lund, James Morris helped Rovers through a decent workout against Evo-Stik East Division opposition at Westfield Lane.

It was the fitness test Grant McCann will have been hoping for, even if it continued to lack the fluency the Rovers boss is looking to instill.

There was no place for new signing Ali Crawford, who joined on a two-year deal earlier in the evening.

But, as promised by McCann, Rovers did field a trialist - and one the Rovers boss knows well.

Forward Taylor - latterly of Bradford City - played alongside McCann at Peterborough United before joining Ipswich Town for £1.5m in 2012.

The 30-year-old featured in a front three in the first half alongside Marquis and Max Watters.

Alex Kiwomya sat the game out after his partner gave birth to their second child on Monday while there was no place for transfer-listed pair Liam Mandeville and Tyler Garratt.

It was a more energetic affair than Rovers had played out at Alfreton at the weekend, though the much cooler temperature certainly helped.

It brought a livelier opposition, one attempting to press and harry Rovers more than they had been in their opening pre-season friendly.

There was less opportunity for Rovers to feel their way into the game and work through the intricacies of McCann's new system.

It did bring more chances and Rovers should have certainly put more away.

Trialist Taylor was a lively presence in the early stages of the game.

Looking to get on the ball, he linked up well with Marquis and showed the desire to shoot on sight which has characterised much of his career.

Twice he fired from 20 yards, shooting narrowly over the bar on both occasions.

His influence waned as the half wore on, which was to be expected at this stage of his own pre-season.

Frickley had their own chances. James Gray should have given the Blues the lead inside ten minutes but failed to connect with Jacob Hazel's low ball.

Joe Wright failed to carry his scoring touch over from the weekend as he headed wide from a good position from a corner.

But Rovers did open the scoring just after the half hour mark.

Marquis took advantage of hesitant defending from Jameel Ible to rob the ball and slam a shot under goalkeeper Callum Fielding.

The striker should have doubled his own tally moments later. He exchanged passes with Matty Blair and only needed to slot in from 12 yards but blazed over the bar.

Substitute Myron Gibbons made a real impact off the bench with his pace causing plenty of problems down the right.

He almost got on the scoresheet after being played in by Marquis but drew a fine save from Fielding on the angle.

Three minutes from the break, the lead was doubled.

Gibbons was released on the right of the box and cut a pass back to Whiteman who slotted under Fielding.

Jacob Fletcher tested the Frickley keeper with a low drive after more good work from Gibbons.

Rovers were all change as planned at the break with an entirely new 11 featuring after the break including youngster Morris and centre half Shane Blaney.

The third goal, just after the hour mark, was the pick of the bunch.

Luke McCullough found May in acres of space on the left and the striker lofted a wonderful lob over the advancing Fielding from outside the box.

Rovers increasingly stretched the opposition as the game wore on and took advantage.

Transfer-listed Lund added Rovers' fourth on 69 minutes when he slotted in confidently with a first time shot from Danny Andrew's deep cross.

Four minutes later they found the fifth with youngster Morris poking in from close range after superb work from Alfie Beestin.
