Doncaster Rovers: Top performers will be recognised, says boss Darren Ferguson

That’s the message that Cedric Evina’s new contract sends out to the Doncaster Rovers squad, boss Darren Ferguson has said.

Evina signed a new two-and-a-half year deal on Saturday before helping Rovers beat Crewe in dramatic fashion, thanks to two stoppage time goals from Cameron Stewart and Andy Williams.

And Ferguson says the Cameroonian’s new contract conveys a clear message.

“This is what I want to do with the club,” said Ferguson.

“I want to build and I want to make sure that the players that have done really well can see that the manager recognises that.

“It’s a big moment for the boy and the club.

“It was something that was on my mind after the first couple of weeks of seeing him, knowing he’d be out of contract in the summer.

“The discussions started that early and credit to the board and Gavin Baldwin who has really pushed hard to get it over the line.

“I’m delighted to get it over the line because if you were to lose Cedric, with the market we’re in, it’s difficult to find a left wing back as good as him.”

Reflecting on his seventh win from 11 games, Ferguson said: “It was a happy dressing room. The reaction at the end of the game, when the whole dugout just erupted, was brilliant to see from a manager’s point of view.

“We deserved to win the game. If we had lost that game it would have been a travesty.

“Credit to my players. They dug in and showed that character. Once we got the equaliser, I thought to myself we might just go and win this.

“They were two great goals, the second and third, but in the end it just came down to pure determination.”
