Paul Dickov is closing in on the final piece of his Rovers jigsaw.

The Scot’s focus is understood to have shifted to a versatile attacking midfielder and another new face could be on board in time to face Sunderland and/or Wolves next week, Dickov said yesterday.

Rovers have lost nine established first team squad players since the end of last season and have so far brought in five new players.

However, in what amounts to a big vote of confidence in the club’s younger players, Dickov says he is comfortable with the number of bodies he currently has at his disposal and does not want to make any signings that would push his most talented youngsters out of the picture.

“I still want to add one, maybe two,” Dickov said.

“I’ve got to be careful what I say to you guys [the media] because at the end of last season I said around about six or eight and I think everyone’s expecting eight to come in.

“We’ve got five in and we’re talking to another couple to fill in another position.

“Without shooting myself in the foot, that should be done next week but there’s always no guarantees.

“I’ve also got to be very wary because I think we’ve got some really talented youngsters here as well,” he added.

“We don’t want to sign players for the sake of it and push all of our youngsters out of the picture.

“I believe two or three of them could really step up this year.

“If that means forfeiting a signing here or there to really bring them on, we’ll do that as well.”

This week’s allocation of squad numbers saw Mitchell Lund handed the number 2 shirt, which suggests he is the youth team product with the best chance of starting the season in the first team.

Harry Middleton and Billy Whitehouse are also pushing hard, while Dickov wants young strikers Jack McKay and Liam Mandeville to put pressure on the senior forwards.

Jamie McCombe, Theo Robinson, Abdul Razak, Reece Wabara, Dean Furman, Stephen Bywater, Kyle Bennett, Liam Wakefield and Enda Stevens have all departed Doncaster since the end of last season. Youngsters Alex Peterson and Lewis Ferguson were also let go after falling out of favour.
