It could be a case of one in, one out for Rovers today after the club confirmed the signing of Abdoulaye Meite until the end of the season.

Midfielder David Syers is on the verge of leaving the club permanently after Scunthorpe United submitted a bid.

Iron chairman Peter Swann has revealed the clubs are ‘quite a way in with negotiations’ and they hope to have Syers available for the game with Mansfield on Saturday.

Syers was in training with Rovers this morning with Paul Dickov set to hold talks with him this afternoon.

He said: “Scunthorpe have contacted us with a bid and it might be something we do so we can get someone else in.

“We’ve had a lot of enquiries above Dave.

“He’s a player we like but there’s competition.

“With Harry Forrester coming back and us looking to bring players in, his chances have been limited.

“We want to help him out.

“If we can do the deal we will, if not we will happily have him here.”

Syers was last week recalled early from the third month of a loan spell at Scunthorpe and played in Rovers’ 3-2 defeat to Stevenage in the FA Cup last weekend.

Dickov was delighted to complete the signing of former Ivory Coast international Meite, who has been in training with the club for the last few months.

Dickov said: “With the question marks over Rob Jones’ fitness going forward, Abdoulaye signing is a massive boost for us.

“He’s a vastly experienced player.

“Luke (McCullough) and Liam (Wakefield) have done very well but we’ve lacked that experience at the back he will give us.”

Meite has won 48 caps for Ivory Coast and has previously played for Marseille, West Brom and Bolton.

Dickov confirmed this morning he hopes to sign a striker before the weekend and is also looking at another defender.
