Players and supporters took to social media to air their devastation following relegation, but the message was clear - we will bounce back.

A 93rd minute equaliser by Birmingham against Bolton condemned Rovers to League One following their 1-0 defeat to Championship champions Leicester City yesterday.

After their fate was sealed, winger David Cotterill told his 17,000 followers on Twitter: “Worst feeling ever today. Wanna thank all the #drfc fans for everything and my team mates for everyone’s effort this season.”

Midfielder Dean Furman echoed those sentiments, saying: “Completely devastated at the moment. It will take a while to get over today but we will come back stronger for it and go again next season!

“A big thank you to all the Donny fans for your fantastic support over the season!!

“Genuinely gutted for everyone associated with the club.”

Having finished his loan spell with the club, Manchester United shot-stopper Sam Johnstone said on his Twitter page: “What a horrible feeling yesterday. I just want to thank the manager an staff for giving me the opportunity to play and gain great experience.

“And also want the thank every single @drfc_official fan for their support towards me and the team. You where great!!

“And the important people behind the scenes that make everything tick along! What a great club, group of lads and top players.”

Stalwart defender Paul Quinn said: “Very humbled to hear some kind words all I can do is thank @drfc_official fans, life is sore at times but together we stand divided we fall!”

The players were also using their social media accounts to offer their respects to the Rovers fan who collapsed during yesterday’s game.
