Rovers are celebrating another impending Championship trip after Paul Dickov’s men were drawn against Fulham in the third round of the Capital One Cup.

A Liam Wakefield match-winner proved enough to down Championship outfit Watford after Lloyd Dyer had cancelled out Nathan Tyson’s 12th minute penalty.

That midweek result thrust Rovers into the next round of the cup competition where they will take on former Premier League side Fulham.

The sides have only met 34 times since they first crossed paths in the 1935/36 season.

The Cottagers just shade bragging rights with 14 wins over Rovers’ 10.

But Doncaster will be going into the tie at Craven Cottage full of confidence following their Hornets sting on Tuesday night.

Dickov said: “I thought we were outstanding [at Watford].

“We’ve come up against a very good team who are flying high at the minute.

“Looking at some of the stats, they only had one shot on target all game. So, defensively that shows how good we were, especially when we played with such a young back four.

“I thought going forward we were fantastic. We broke well and kept the ball brilliantly and really put pressure on them. I’m delighted for the boys.

“We knew it was going to be difficult. They play good football and credit has to go to our players because Watford had to change their system three or four times to try and break us down.

“We started the game very well. In the first 25 minutes we were outstanding, but then we started to complicate things. At half time we just told the boys to calm things down, do the basics right and keep it simple - and in the second half they did an excellent job of that.”

The tie will be played in the week commencing Sept 22.
