Doncaster Rovers: Ferguson keen to cool Grant hype

Darren Ferguson admits he is reluctant to talk up Conor Grant too much – for fear of losing him to another club.

Grant has made a major impression at Doncaster Rovers since arriving on loan from Everton with plenty of clamour for the deal to be extended beyond January.

All eyes were on the 20-year-old after he scored twice in the 3-1 FA Cup win at Cambridge United last weekend.

But Ferguson was keen to rein in the plaudits for the admittedly talented midfielder.

“I don’t want to give him too much praise because someone else will try and pinch him,” Ferguson told The Star.

“We know what he can do. He’s really playing with a lot of freedom.

“He’s got a really good attitude towards the game.

“He knows he’s got to learn, he wants to work hard on certain things and he’s always out after training.

“That will stand him in good stead.

“The boy will have a really good career. At what level is probably down to him.”

Meanwhile, Grant has spoken of the positive influence the more experienced players at the club have had on his development.

“They’ve been massive for me,” he said.

“The experienced players always are because they’ve been there, they’ve done it and they know what it takes to do well.

“The advice they’ve been giving me has been very good.

“There’s a good mix here in terms of young and old, and I think that’s helping the team do well.

“I just think we’ve got to take it game by game and just keep on winning and getting positive results.

“We’re a good team and we can achieve a lot.

“But it’s all right saying that, we’ve got to actually do it on the pitch.”
