Darren Ferguson says Rovers’ latest formation switch could be here to stay – but only if his players improve in possession.

Ferguson deployed a 3-4-3 system against Oldham Athletic on Monday, continuing with the use of wing backs but with James Coppinger and Conor Grant flanking lone striker Andy Williams with Nathan Tyson rested on the bench.

While pleased with the doggednesss of his side’s performance in the 2-1 win, he was disappointed with the manner in which they kept the ball.

“It’s a really good system but you have to be good on the ball and at times we weren’t,” Ferguson told The Star.

“Apart from a couple of good ten minute periods, we didn’t get in control of possession.

“We changed it a couple of times but the players know what it’s all about.

“It’s a system the players understand but we need to work on it a bit more if we want to continue using it.

“It’s a system where if you’re good on the ball and good in possession like we were for a ten minute period, I think we’ve got clever enough players in Coppinger and Conor to play between the lines.”

Reports in Scotland allege Rovers midfielder Harry Forrester is in Glasgow to finalise a move to Rangers.

The Daily Record reported Forrester had travelled in order to undergo a medical on Tuesday and would sign a short term deal with the club after ‘negotiating his own release’ from Rovers.

The 24-year-old’s switch is likely to be confirmed once the transfer window opens on Friday.

Forrester is out of contract with Rovers at the end of the season and has made only two substitute appearances since Ferguson was appointed as boss 11 weeks ago.
