Doncaster Rovers could be set to sign Sheffield United midfielder Ben Whiteman on loan, The Star understands.

Darren Ferguson is keen to add to his midfield ranks after releasing Paul Keegan and Gary McSheffrey, transfer-listing Harry Middleton, plus opting against the pursuit of a permanent deal for former loanee Conor Grant.

And 20-year-old Whiteman is primed to claim one of the two midfield vacancies Ferguson is looking to fill.

Technically strong and good in front of goal, the ball-playing midfielder fits the bill of a Ferguson player.

The Blades Academy graduate spent the second half of the season on loan at Mansfield Town, scoring seven goals in 23 appearances.

While admitting he enjoyed his time with the Stags, Whiteman himself told The Star yesterday he would likely be heading out on loan to a League One club for the coming season.

“I think the manager wants me go out on-loan again next season,” he said.

“Even though I was only at Mansfield for a short spell, the club is close to me, but I think it’ll be League One.”

Championship newcomers United are said to be keen for Whiteman to move to Rovers for the season.

After spending his early teens with Manchester United, he joined the Blades for whom he has made 12 senior appearances to date.

He remains very much one for the future at Bramall Lane with boss Chris Wilder set to offer him a new contract.
