Doncaster Rovers chairman David Blunt says Darren Ferguson's track record ensured he stood out over the rest of the candidates for the club's managerial role.

Ferguson was named the club's new boss yesterday after a five and a half week recruitment process.

And while impressed with the total package the former Peterborough United manager brought, it was his style of football and promotion credentials that sealed the deal for Blunt and the club's owners.

"Obviously the biggest factors were the performance on the field, which everyone is keen on," Blunt said.

"Darren's philosophy of exciting, attacking football ticked our box.

"His career win ratio of 42 per cent, no other applicant had got that win ratio which we believe is fantastic.

"He understands what is needed to get from a League One side to a Championship side. Darren has a track record of doing that at Peterborough.

"To reiterate, our ambitions for Doncaster Rovers is a sustainable Championshop club.

"Our immediate ambition is to reach the play-offs this year - so no pressure on Darren there.

"But we do recognise we're on the beginning of the journey, not the destination."

Blunt explained the protracted recruitment policy as being due to a desire to 'get the right man.'

But he also said Ferguson stood out from the beginning.

He said: "We promised around five and a half weeks ago that we would go through a detailed recruitment process.

"We considered people in employment and out of employment. We looked at people who applied and people that hadn't applied. We looked at people from within this country and abroad as well.

"It was quite an extensive process and we had over 70 applicants for the job.

"But Darren was the outstanding applicant.

"There were a number of factors that influenced our decision.

"His passion for coming to Doncaster Rovers was high on our list.

"His energy and drive. His commitment to the community and engagement with the community.

"We also wish to provide a pathway for opportunity for our young people and the young people of Doncaster. Darren was passionate about that as well."
