Doncaster Rovers boss Paul Dickov counts the cost of cup defeat to Ipswich

Paul Dickov was left counting the cost of last night’s defeat to Ipswich Town in the Capital One Cup - despite an encouraging display against the Championship leaders.

Rovers went ahead through Andy Williams and their first goal from open play this season was the cue for some enterprising attacking play.

But the Tractor Boys’ extra quality in the final third eventually told as goals from Brett Pitman, David McGoldrick, James Alabi and Ryan Fraser sent Mick McCarthy’s side through to the third round.

The scoreline was harsh on Rovers who, prior to the game going into extra-time, had produced their best display on home soil this season.

And the night came at an extra cost as skipper Rob Jones and Luke McCullough both went off injured to add their names to Rovers’ ever-growing injury list.

Boss Paul Dickov said: “For the majority of the 90 minutes we more than matched a team with top Championship players in it. The aggression in some of our play was pleasing and I thought our front two [Andy Williams and Curtis Main] were the catalyst for us.

He added: “It looks as if Luke’s damaged his knee in a block tackle. We don’t know the full extent yet.

“Unfortunately it looks as though Jonah’s damaged his neck again.

“We’ll assess them both and take it from there.”

Ipswich, meanwhile, were rewarded for their win with a trip to Manchester United in the third round.
